Red-tailed Catfish and Peacock Bass Spotted in Terengganu Waters: Fisheries Department
The Terengganu Fisheries Department recently made an alarming discovery in the waters of Terengganu. They found red-tailed catfish and peacock bass in Sungai Terengganu and Tasik Telabak, which are both foreign predatory fish species that could harm the local marine ecosystem. Anglers reported the presence of these fish, suspecting that they had been released by irresponsible individuals. Fortunately, the situation is currently under control, and there is no immediate threat to the biodiversity of Terengganu waters. The department is actively monitoring the situation to prevent any disruptions to the local fish population.
The director of the Fisheries Department, Ruzaidi Mamat, emphasized the importance of not releasing foreign fish species into rivers or lakes as it poses a danger to native aquatic life. He also highlighted that anyone interested in keeping prohibited fish species like arapaima or pacu must obtain a special license from the Director-General of Fisheries Malaysia. Currently, only three individuals in Terengganu have been granted such a license, and those who already have these fish are encouraged to apply for a license promptly to avoid facing fines.
It’s crucial for all parties to be aware of the impact of releasing non-native fish species into the environment and to take responsible actions to protect the local ecosystem. Let’s work together to safeguard the marine life in Terengganu waters for the future.
