Jodie Whittaker: Boys on Female Doctor Who

Jodie Whittaker, known for her role as the first female Doctor, recently shared that boys didn’t quite see her as a hero figure when she was announced as the 13th Doctor. This revelation comes after Peter Davison, another former Doctor, expressed disappointment over the change.

Whittaker, 42, raised a thought-provoking question about why her gender should matter in portraying the Doctor, especially since she grew up admiring male actors in the role. “It’s never been questioned that I had to look up to men,” she shared with The Sunday Times. “So it was fascinating that for some, we [women] could not be role models.”

Despite facing backlash from a small but vocal group, Whittaker’s selection had garnered support from many, including the then-prime minister Theresa May. However, the negative reactions did affect her, leading to feelings of pressure and self-doubt. “If Peter [Capaldi] hadn’t been good as the Doctor, it would only have reflected on him,” she admitted.

As speculations swirl around the future of Doctor Who, with rumors of the show potentially facing cancellation, the broadcaster remains firm that such reports are unfounded. With uncertainty looming, fans of the iconic series continue to wait for updates on what lies ahead for the time-traveling Doctor.
