NHL announces first decentralized draft at Peacock Theater, Los Angeles
The NHL Draft is back in Los Angeles, marking the second time L.A. and the Los Angeles Kings will host the event as announced by the NHL. But this year, there’s a twist – things are going digital.
Set to take place on June 27 and 28 at L.A. Live’s Peacock Theater, the draft will see top prospects, fans, and media attending in person, while NHL executives, scouts, and coaches will be joining virtually. This new setup, reminiscent of the NFL and NBA drafts, brings a fresh perspective to the event. Traditionally, NHL executives would strategize right from the draft floor, but this year, it’s all about the digital experience.
Steve Mayer, president of NHL Events & Content, highlighted the significance of showcasing the league’s future stars in Los Angeles, a city known for its own stars. With the support of the Kings, LA Tourism, and Upper Deck, the stage is set for an extraordinary event with a creative touch that sets it apart. More details are expected to unfold in the coming months.
In 2024, the draft was held at the Sphere in Las Vegas, but now all eyes are on L.A. for what promises to be an exciting event. The first round is scheduled for June 27, followed by rounds 2 through 7 on June 28.
As for the top pick in 2025, the competition is tight. Players like Michael Misa from Saginaw Spirit, Matthew Schaefer from Erie Otters, Porter Martone from Brampton Steelheads, and James Hagens from Boston College, are all in line for the coveted No. 1 spot.
While the date for the NHL Draft Lottery is yet to be announced, the San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks, and Nashville Predators were leading the race for the top selection as of last Saturday. Stay tuned for more updates!
And that’s the latest from the NHL Draft scene in sunny Los Angeles. Exciting times are ahead for hockey fans as the league gears up for this year’s event.
