Lizzy Caplan Discusses Easy Decision to Join Netflix’s ‘Zero Day’

Lizzy Caplan, known for her role in “Mean Girls,” recently joined the cast of Netflix’s “Zero Day,” where she stars alongside Robert De Niro. Caplan shared that working on the show was an easy decision due to De Niro’s involvement and the strong team of co-creators behind the scenes.

In the series, Caplan plays Alexandra Mullen, De Niro’s daughter, who is a young congresswoman in New York trying to carve out her own political path. Portraying De Niro’s daughter was a dream come true for Caplan, who expressed admiration for the seasoned actor and his generosity as a scene partner.

While the characters’ political affiliations are left intentionally vague in the show, Caplan described her character as very left-leaning and popular online. She mentioned that there are subtle similarities to public figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and daughters of former presidents, but ultimately, Alexandra’s character is a unique blend of various influences.

Caplan also discussed how the show’s themes of political divisiveness remain relevant regardless of the real-world events, like the outcome of the 2024 election. She emphasized that the show aims to be a cautionary tale about the current state of the country and the potential consequences of ongoing division.

Looking ahead, Caplan shared her plans to develop and create her own work outside of “Zero Day.” For fans interested in checking out the series, all episodes are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
