2025 NHL Draft scheduled for Peacock Theater in Los Angeles

When the NHL draft rolls around this summer, fans can expect a lot more of Gary Bettman in the spotlight. The 2025 NHL draft is set to take place on June 27-28 at L.A. Live’s Peacock Theatre, and Bettman, the NHL’s commissioner since 1993, will be making an exciting debut: announcing each first-round pick for the first time ever.

During a recent statement before the Los Angeles Kings faced off against the Utah Hockey Club, Bettman shared, “Hopefully there won’t be too many hard [names] to pronounce.” This draft will mark a significant shift for the hockey world, as teams will participate virtually from their own cities, a model that has long been standard in the NFL and NBA drafts. Bettman has been a strong advocate for this format change.

In the past, teams traditionally announced their own selections, but now that responsibility falls on Bettman’s shoulders. This decision comes after teams expressed a desire for a more unified approach to the draft process. While Bettman is no stranger to a chorus of boos from hockey fans, he is embracing this new role with enthusiasm.

In addition to the format change, President of events and content Steve Mayer hinted at an exciting new look and creative approach for the event. Details about these enhancements will be revealed in the months leading up to the draft.

After three years of conducting the draft in person, the NHL is bidding farewell to the old format with this innovative approach. While the draft will still feature Bettman and top prospects in attendance, the expanded role of the commissioner adds a fresh perspective to the event.

As Bettman aptly put it, “The clubs asked for this, and we’re going to give it a try.” This year’s draft promises to be a memorable and engaging experience for fans, prospects, and teams alike. Stay tuned for more updates as the draft date approaches!
