Steven Knight, Creator of Peaky Blinders, Remains Loyal to BBC Despite New Disney+ Project
Peaky Blinders creator, Steven Knight, is known for his BBC loyalty, but that doesn’t stop him from branching out with his new show A Thousand Blows on Disney+. The series, set in the gritty world of illegal boxing in 1880s London, stars Stephen Graham as the infamous boxer Sugar Goodson.
In this upcoming drama, viewers will follow the journey of two friends from Jamaica, Hezekiah Moscow and Alec Munroe, as they navigate the dangerous underbelly of London’s bare-knuckle boxing scene. Malachi Kirby, known for his role in Small Axe, plays Hezekiah, who encounters Mary Carr, the Queen of the Forty Elephants gang, played by Erin Doherty from The Crown, in his quest for success.
Steven Knight addressed questions about the show being made by the BBC, emphasizing his love for the network and its creative opportunities. While A Thousand Blows found its home on Disney+, Knight remains dedicated to his work with the BBC on other projects.
Inspired by true stories, A Thousand Blows delves into the untold narratives of Hezekiah Moscow and Mary Carr, imagining a world where their paths cross. Knight’s goal is to shed light on the cultural dynamics of class during that era, highlighting the struggles of East versus West in the East End of London.
The first season of A Thousand Blows is set to premiere on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland on February 21, with a second season already in the works. With a stellar cast and a gripping storyline, this period drama promises to be a thrilling and insightful watch for audiences.
