She-Hulk Cancelled Twice Before Marvel’s Disney+ Series
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a knack for turning lesser-known characters into household names through their popular big-screen movies. Characters like Rocket Raccoon, Scarlet Witch, the Falcon, the Eternals, and even Hawkeye have all been given the Hollywood treatment. This trend continued with the introduction of Disney+ shows, including spin-offs featuring heroes like Moon Knight and She-Hulk. It turns out, bringing She-Hulk to life on screen wasn’t as straightforward as it may seem.
She-Hulk, or Jennifer Walters, made her debut in the comic books in 1979. Her character was created midway through the “Incredible Hulk” TV series that starred Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. After the show ended in 1982, a series of TV movies continued the Hulk’s story. In the 1990 movie “The Death of the Incredible Hulk,” there were plans to introduce She-Hulk in live-action, but unfortunately, those plans never came to fruition.
Despite these setbacks, there was hope for She-Hulk in the ’90s. The character was considered for her own TV series on ABC, and it’s rumored that a full pilot may have even been filmed. However, this project also never saw the light of day. Fans had to wait years before She-Hulk was finally given the chance to shine in her own show. There was even talk of a ’90s live-action movie adaptation featuring Hollywood star Brigitte Nielsen in the role of Jennifer Walters. But like the earlier attempts, this project was also shelved.
While the recent Disney+ series “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” was met with enthusiasm from fans, it unfortunately met an early demise after just one season. Reports suggest that Disney pulled the plug due to concerns over the final budget for the show. Despite this setback, Marvel is known for revisiting old characters in cameo roles, so there may be hope yet for She-Hulk to return to the screen. It’s disappointing to see such a fun and unique character like She-Hulk get pushed aside once more, but in the ever-evolving world of entertainment, anything is possible.
