Longest PV Skylight in U.S. Powers Apple TV+ Severance Headquarters.

The building that Mark S. goes to every day to become his “Innie” on Apple TV+’s Severance used to be the headquarters of Bell Labs, where the first commercial solar cell was invented. The transformation of this historic building into the set for Lumon’s headquarters has added a new layer of fame to its story. In the 1960s, Bell Labs moved to Holmdel, New Jersey, and now the scenes for Severance are filmed there.

Now known as Bell Works, the 2-million-ft2 building has been redeveloped by Somerset Development into a vibrant “metroburb” with a mix of offices, retail spaces, dining options, and more. The building’s industrial aesthetic adds a unique backdrop for the show and has earned it IMDb credits.

One of the key features of the Severance set is the longest PV glass skylight in the United States. Installed by Abender Electric using Onyx Solar Energy’s glass solar panels, this skylight lights up the quarter-mile long atrium with natural light. The solar skylight, generating up to 175 kW of solar power, maintains the original aesthetics of the building while providing sustainable energy.

The innovative lighting from the skylight adds a futuristic and slightly eerie ambiance that complements the mysterious work of the Macrodata Refinement team in the show. It’s fascinating to see how renewable energy and entertainment can come together to create a unique viewing experience on screen.
