Emily Mortimer Cast as Cressida Dick in Disney+ Met Police Drama
Actress Emily Mortimer is set to portray former Met police officer Dame Cressida Dick in an upcoming Disney+ series focusing on the tragic shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes. In 2005, Jean Charles was mistakenly shot by police officers who thought he was a terrorist, leading to a legal battle and public outrage.
The new drama, titled Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, is slated to air this spring on Disney+. The series will provide a multi-perspective look at the events surrounding the shooting, shedding light on the complexities of memory and truth.
Alongside Mortimer, the cast will feature Conleth Hill as Met commissioner Sir Ian Blair, Russell Tovey as deputy assistant commissioner Brian Paddick, and newcomer Edison Alcaide as Jean Charles de Menezes. The production has consulted closely with Jean Charles’s family to ensure accuracy and sensitivity in portraying the events.
Despite the controversy surrounding the shooting, Dame Cressida was cleared of personal blame in a trial back in 2007. She has since held significant roles within the Metropolitan Police, eventually becoming the first female commissioner in 2017 before resigning in 2022.
The tragic case of Jean Charles de Menezes sparked protests and criticism of police tactics, highlighting the challenges of maintaining public safety while respecting individual rights. Disney+ aims to explore these complexities in its upcoming series, inviting viewers to reflect on a challenging chapter in recent history.
