Netflix Addresses ‘Emilia Pérez’ Controversy
Netflix is standing by “Emilia Pérez” amidst the controversy surrounding its lead star, Karla Sofía Gascón. In a recent appearance on the “The Town” podcast, Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria addressed the issue for the first time, expressing disappointment at the distraction it has caused from the film’s success.
“Emilia Pérez” was initially poised to be a major player in the awards season after Netflix acquired it for $12 million following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Jacques Audiard, the movie tells the story of a Mexican cartel leader (portrayed by Gascón) who seeks gender affirmation surgery and reunites with her family, including her wife played by Selena Gomez.
Despite early criticism, the film won four Golden Globe awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and received 13 Academy Award nominations. Gascón made history as the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for Best Actress.
However, Gascón faced backlash for accusing fellow nominee Fernanda Torres’ team of speaking negatively about her and the film, raising concerns about violating the Academy’s campaign rules.
Despite the controversies, Netflix continues to support “Emilia Pérez” and the talented individuals behind it, emphasizing the film’s critical success and accolades.
