Jio Hotstar poses threat to Prime Video and Netflix today

India’s streaming world just got a bit busier with the debut of JioHotstar, a new super app combining JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. This all-in-one platform offers a range of entertainment, from movies and shows to sports, all in one place.

By merging the two popular services, JioHotstar is stepping up as a direct competitor to giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. What sets JioHotstar apart is its wallet-friendly approach: starting at just ₹149 per month for a mobile plan with ads, or ₹1,499 annually for ad-free viewing. This pricing undercuts the competition, making premium content more accessible to a wider audience.

CEO Kevin Vaz of JioStar Entertainment has reassured existing Disney+ Hotstar subscribers that prices won’t change, and JioCinema users will be upgraded to the premium tier at no extra cost.

While JioHotstar offers a vast library of free content to its whopping 50 crore viewers, Hollywood movies are behind a paywall. This launch adds pressure on Prime Video and Netflix, forcing them to reevaluate their strategies in the Indian market.

With its mix of ad-supported and paid content, along with its extensive local reach, JioHotstar is poised to shake up the streaming industry. As competition intensifies, the big question remains: how will Netflix and Prime Video respond to this new player in the game?
