Court of Thorns and Roses TV Adaptation Canceled by Hulu and 20th Television

Hulu and 20th Television have officially announced the cancellation of the TV adaptation of Sarah J. Maas’ popular book series, A Court of Thorns and Roses.

The project, which was originally developed by Ron Moore, creator of Outlander, has been in the works for four years but unfortunately will not be moving forward. Rumors about the cancellation started circulating in early 2024, especially after Moore left 20th Television for Sony Pictures Television. Despite some speculations about finding another writer to take over, Hulu and 20th TV made the final decision to drop the adaptation.

Fans of the series have had mixed reactions to the news, with many expressing disappointment at the years of development that have now gone to waste. Some fans see it as a missed opportunity, considering the large fanbase the book series has on platforms like TikTok. On the other hand, some fans are relieved, believing that a rushed or poorly done adaptation could have been detrimental to the beloved world of the series. Now, there is hope among fans that another streaming service, like Amazon Prime Video or Netflix, might take over the rights and give the story the treatment it deserves.

Originally planned to be Hulu’s first foray into fantasy content, the series was envisioned to be in competition with Disney+ titles like Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Based on Maas’ best-selling novels, A Court of Thorns and Roses is a reimagination of Beauty and the Beast that combines elements of romance, adventure, and political intrigue.

Since the cancellation by Hulu, the intellectual property remains valuable, leaving the possibility open for another network or streaming platform to potentially revive the project. The book series, which first debuted in 2015, has a dedicated fan following across five installments, with the latest release, A Court of Silver Flames, coming out in 2021.
