Apple TV+ show ‘The Gorge’ Review: Chemistry and Genre Clash

Are you tired of romance taking over every movie and show you watch? It can be tough to find love-free entertainment these days, but fear not! Apple TV+ has a new science fiction action film called ‘The Gorge’ that might just be what you’re looking for.

In this movie, Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy play Levi and Drasa, two contract killers recruited for a mysterious mission. They are tasked with guarding the east and west sides of a massive breach in the earth known as “the gorge.” The catch? They must live alone in their respective towers for a year, keeping watch for any “hollow men” trying to escape the breach.

Despite the no-communication rule, Drasa and Levi find a way to connect through written notes, sparking a long-distance courtship that drives the story forward. While their awkward romance may not be the most convincing, it adds a quirky charm to this genre mashup.

Visually, ‘The Gorge’ shines with its storytelling in the first half, using expressions and body language to convey emotions. The monster design in the later part of the film is cool, reminiscent of other sci-fi classics. However, some action scenes feel a bit lacking, possibly due to resource constraints.

The ending of the movie may leave you scratching your head, as a surprising twist raises more questions than answers. But if you’re in the mood for a compromise between romance and science fiction action, ‘The Gorge’ might just be the perfect Valentine’s Day watch for you.

Catch ‘The Gorge’ on Apple TV+ starting February 14th, 2025.
