Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller star in sci-fi romance ‘The Gorge’ review

Apple TV+’s The Gorge offers a thrilling mix of action, romance, and sci-fi, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller as two top-notch snipers stationed at a mysterious World War II-era base.

Directed by Scott Derrickson, the film delivers a unique blend of heart-pounding combat scenes and an unexpected love story.

Following the story of Levi (played by Teller), a former U.S. Marine, and Drasa (played by Taylor-Joy), a Lithuanian assassin, who find themselves guarding a massive gorge that separates their bases. Despite starting off as foes, they gradually develop feelings for each other through hidden messages, injecting a surprising romantic angle into the film’s intense setting. At the same time, they face the daunting task of keeping the unknown terrors within the gorge from breaking free.

While The Gorge impresses with its explosive action and stunning visuals, the storyline’s predictability somewhat lessens its impact. Screenwriter Zach Dean (known for The Tomorrow War, Fast X) relies on familiar action formulas and tends to give answers too freely, leading to a somewhat conventional narrative. The film effectively builds tension through its pacing and camera work, but the lack of surprises due to the standard storytelling approach might leave audiences wanting more.

The standout element of The Gorge is the chemistry between Taylor-Joy and Teller, with their banter bringing charm to the film’s more predictable aspects. While the movie doesn’t revolutionize the sci-fi or action genres, it offers an entertaining ride for fans of high-energy thrillers with a hint of romance.
