Disney+ to Ease Content Warnings on Classic Films Amid Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Updates

In light of changing cultural landscapes and evolving societal values, Disney+ is making adjustments to its autoplay warnings on older movies like ‘Dumbo’ and ‘Peter Pan’ to address racial stereotypes.

Originally introduced by Disney in November 2019, the content warnings were designed to provide context for viewers before watching classic films like ‘Dumbo’ (1941) and ‘Peter Pan’ (1953). These warnings highlighted and addressed outdated racist portrayals present in the movies.

In response to ongoing societal shifts, Disney has updated the wording of the disclosures in 2020. The new message acknowledges the negative depictions and mistreatment of people or cultures in these films. It emphasizes that these stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Instead of removing the content entirely, Disney aims to recognize the harmful impact, foster dialogue, and promote a more inclusive future.

As part of broader changes happening in response to cultural and political shifts, Disney+ is committed to creating stories that reflect a more diverse and inclusive world.
