“The Diplomat” Netflix Drama Films at Planting Fields Arboretum
The Netflix political-intrigue drama “The Diplomat” recently set up shop on Long Island at Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park in Oyster Bay to film part of Season 3. This popular series follows Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, the newly appointed American ambassador to the United Kingdom who finds herself tangled up in international conspiracies and high-level brinkmanship. Season 2 left fans on a cliffhanger, revealing the death of the U.S. president right after Wyler contemplated a run for vice president.
While filming has predominantly occurred in England, Scotland, and Paris, the evolving storyline led the production team to a new base in Brooklyn, making Long Island’s Gold Coast a picturesque filming location. Film permits for the shoot were secured in mid-January, with the cast and crew spending a solid three weeks to a month at Planting Fields Arboretum.
Most of the filming took place at Coe Hall, the mansion located within the arboretum, along with some scenes shot at the Camellia Greenhouse nearby. Despite the increased activity, no roads were officially closed for filming. However, one eyewitness did share an interesting tidbit about an “official looking motorcade” passing through the area, sparking curiosity and excitement among locals.
The star-studded cast of “The Diplomat” includes Rufus Sewell as Kate Wyler’s husband, Hal Wyler, and David Gyasi as British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison. Fans will also recognize Allison Janney, who portrays Vice President Grace Penn, and Bradley Whitford, joining the cast as her husband, Todd Penn. While the airdate for Season 3 has yet to be announced, fans are eagerly anticipating what’s in store for their favorite characters.
Planting Fields Arboretum has a history of hosting notable productions, including movies like “The Valachi Papers” (1972), “Sabrina” (1995), and “Noah” (2014), as well as the TV series “Royal Pains.” With its picturesque backdrop and grand estate, it’s no wonder why “The Diplomat” chose this location to bring its dramatic storyline to life.
