Man in Mumbai arrested for killing peacock in Kalyan

A 35-year-old man was arrested in Rundhe village, Khadvli, for allegedly hunting a peacock, as reported by an official. The accused, Ganesh Phasale, works as a laborer at brick sites in Khadvli, located in the Kalyan taluka of Thane District. The forest department team led by Forest Officer Sanjay Channe received information about the hunting activity in Rundhe Gaon. Known for its natural beauty and bird population, Rundhe Gaon was the site of the alleged illegal activity.

Upon receiving the tip-off, the team went to the brick site in Rundhe Gaon where they found Ganesh Phasale in possession of the carcasses of a peacock, which he had already prepared for consumption. The authorities seized the carcasses and took Phasale into custody for further questioning.

During interrogation and investigation, it was revealed that the peacock was trapped by the accused, who admitted to killing it with the intention of consuming it. Ganesh Phasale has been charged under the Wildlife Protection Act for hunting birds and was produced in court before being remanded in police custody for additional investigation.

The peacock, India’s national bird, is classified as highly protected wildlife under Schedule I, alongside other endangered species like tigers, leopards, elephants, and wolves. Violating the Wildlife Protection Act can result in serious consequences, as illustrated by this case.
