Kalyan Man Arrested for Poaching Peacock during Conservation Efforts

A man in Kalyan, Thane district, has been detained for allegedly killing a peacock, which has sparked concerns about wildlife conservation in the area. The man, Ganesh Shravan Fasale, a 35-year-old brick kiln worker from Runde, was arrested on Saturday night after a tip-off led authorities to him. They found peacock parts and cooked meat in his possession, resulting in his arrest under the Wildlife Protection Act. Currently, he is being held in custody for four days at the forest department’s Khadavali office.

According to Range Forest Officer Sanjay Channe, this incident seems to be isolated and not part of a larger poaching network. Channe highlighted the economic hardships faced by tribal communities in the region, which sometimes drive them to hunt for survival. Efforts are underway to raise awareness and prevent similar incidents in the future. Peacocks are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, underscoring their importance in conservation efforts.
