Peacock Announces Retirement After 32 Years

Michelle Peacock reflects on her 32 years as Community Education Director for Becker School District with a beaming smile. Her journey began after graduating from St. Cloud State University with a degree in Elementary Education, and she became the third Community Education Director for Becker in 1987. While she officially retired this year, she continued to assist until Jennifer Johnson took over, praising the community for their unwavering support.

For Peacock, Community Education is all about collaboration between community members, the school district, and the community education department. A unique aspect of Minnesota is its statewide funding for Community Education, which originated with the “Lighted Schoolhouse Legislation” in 1969. This legislation allowed community members to utilize school buildings outside of regular hours, showcasing a strong bond between residents and their schools.

In Becker, local churches hold services, businesses partner with the Chamber of Commerce for events, and educational programs thrive. Peacock’s dedication to the mission of Community Education has led to a wide range of programs like early childhood classes, GED courses, and Senior Driving classes. The Becker Youth Association, archery, the Bass Fishing team, and robotics all found their roots in Community Ed.

Peacock’s approach was simple – listen to the community. Often, passionate individuals would spearhead new programs, from Belly Dancing to Group Hypnosis. Reflecting on her tenure, Peacock marvels at the impact of Community Ed, from teaching every child in Becker to swim to fostering a sense of connection within the community.

When asked about her favorite program, Peacock hesitated, likening it to choosing a favorite child. Grateful for the countless supporters and contributors, she credits her dedicated staff – Jackie Cox, Dawn Gulczinski, and Jennifer Edling – who have become like family over the years.

Looking ahead, Peacock plans to travel the world with her husband Tracy, though Becker will always hold a special place in her heart. She hopes to stay connected with the people who made her 32 years unforgettable, expressing immense pride in the Becker Community Ed program. In her words, it is truly one of the best in the state.
