Watson Leaves Sherlock Holmes in New TV Show

A new streaming series, Watson, has hit Paramount+ and it’s giving off major House vibes. But unlike House, this show is directly connected to Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories. In Watson, we have the actual Watson, not Wilson, and Holmes is Holmes, not House. The series is set after The Final Problem, where Holmes and Moriarty supposedly met their end at Reichenball Fall.

Morris Chestnut plays Watson, who wakes up in the hospital after Holmes’ supposed death to find that he’s left him a considerable sum to start a diagnostic clinic in Pittsburgh. He then assembles a team of young doctors to solve mysterious medical cases. The team includes Ingrid, Sasha, and twins Stephens and Adam, along with the medical director Mary Morsten, Watson’s estranged wife.

The show follows a case-of-the-week format, focusing on the medical team as they tackle unusual illnesses and longer story arcs like Moriarty’s plans, Ingrid’s secrets, and Watson’s personal struggles. In the first five episodes, Watson moves along at a steady pace, with characters that draw on the rich Conan Doyle universe.

As a series, Watson has promise, but it will need time to develop a deeper connection with the audience. With creator Craig Sweeney behind the scenes, who worked on Elementary, another modern-day Doyle adaptation, there’s hope for the show’s longevity. The key challenge will be defining Watson’s character without the immediate presence of Holmes.

Watson is currently available for streaming on Paramount+, with new episodes releasing weekly. If you’re a fan of medical dramas and Sherlock Holmes lore, this one might be worth checking out.
