Disney+ Supports HDR10+ Co-Developed by Samsung
During CES 2025, Disney dropped some big news about its streaming service. They announced that Disney+ is gearing up to support HDR10+, which is fantastic for Samsung users across their phones, tablets, and TVs.
What does this mean for you? Well, simply put, Disney+ will soon be able to stream content in HDR10+ on its apps. While it already works with Dolby Vision and HDR10, this addition will bring dynamic range metadata to Samsung devices. HDR10+ is a lot like Dolby Vision, offering that dynamic range metadata on a frame-by-frame basis. The cool thing is, it’s royalty-free and was actually developed by 20th Century Fox, Amazon, Panasonic, and Samsung themselves.
Now, it’s worth noting that despite HDR10+ being free, Dolby Vision is more commonly used right now. It’s favored by more production studios, device makers, and streaming platforms. Amazon’s Prime Video was actually the first to jump on the HDR10+ train, followed by Apple TV+ in 2023. And now Disney+ is joining the party!
One thing to remember is that Samsung devices can’t handle Dolby Vision, so if a video isn’t available in HDR10+, it will default to regular HDR10 or even just SDR on Samsung gadgets. Hulu, Paramount+, and YouTube offer limited content in HDR10+, and even EA released a game, ‘Dragon Age: The Vailguard,’ in HDR10+. There’s a potential for more HDR10+ content in the future, especially with Intel supporting it on their ARC GPUs and the ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard backing it.
We’re hoping for a wider range of HDR10+ content heading your way soon!
