Streaming Service Price Increase: Do You Really Need This One?

Discovery+ has some news for all you streaming enthusiasts out there! They’ve decided to adjust the prices for their plans, starting on January 7 for new customers and on or after February 7 for existing customers. The ad-supported plan will now be $5.99 per month, up from $4.99, while the ad-free plan will be $9.99 per month, up from $8.99. If you’re currently on a promotional plan, don’t worry, you won’t see any changes until your promotional period ends.

When Discovery+ first launched back in 2021, they offered the ad-free tier for $6.99 a month and the ad-supported tier for $4.99. In 2023, they made their first price increase, bringing ad-free viewing to $8.99 per month.

In 2023, Warner Bros. Media introduced Max, a combined platform that includes HBO Max and Discovery+ content. Max is priced at $9.99 per month for the ad-supported tier and $16.99 for the ad-free tier. Depending on your preferences and how much you mind ads, you might find Max to be a better fit for your streaming needs compared to just Discovery+.

Price hikes are happening across the streaming industry, so it’s a good idea to stay informed about any changes to your subscriptions. Warner Bros. reported a total of 110.5 million subscribers across its Max, HBO, HBO Max, and Discovery+ platforms by the end of the third quarter in 2024.
