The Sail Power and Steam Museum is excited to announce its upcoming event, “Captains’ Quarters,” featuring Captain Alexander Peacock of the Arctic Schooner Bowdoin. Taking place on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at 6:30 p.m., this online talk will be a fascinating exploration of the historic vessel and its incredible voyages.

The Bowdoin, built in 1921 for Arctic exploration, has been sailing for over a century. In the summer of 2024, the ship embarked on its 33rd journey to the Arctic, the first in 16 years. Manned by a crew of nine Maine Maritime students and professional sailors, the Bowdoin faced treacherous conditions including high seas, icebergs, and intense katabatic winds. Over the course of an 8-week, 4,575-mile trip, the vessel reached its goal of sailing north of the 70th Parallel, nearly 240 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

As the official sailing vessel of the State of Maine and the flagship of Maine Maritime Academy, the Bowdoin holds a special place in maritime history as the first ship designed specifically for Arctic exploration.
