On This Day in History: January 6, Trump supporters storm Capitol
Today, January 6th, marks a significant day in history. Back in 2021, supporters of President Donald Trump broke into the Capitol building, fueled by false claims of a stolen election. The chaos that ensued led to the interruption of the certification of Joe Biden’s victory. It was a turbulent day that saw rioters assaulting police and causing lawmakers to seek refuge. Tragically, a Trump supporter lost her life in the chaos, and a Capitol Police Officer later passed away due to injuries sustained during the riot.
But let’s not dwell on the past alone. On this day in 1919, the world lost former President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt laid out the ambitious goal of the “Four Freedoms” in his State of the Union address. Fast forward to 1982, and the United States experimented with year-round daylight saving time to save fuel during the OPEC oil embargo.
There’s more history to explore on this day. In 1994, figure skater Nancy Kerrigan faced an assault in Detroit. And in 2005, Edgar Ray Killen was indicted for murder charges related to civil rights workers in Mississippi from 1964.
As for birthdays today, we’re celebrating actor-comedian Rowan Atkinson turning 70, Golf Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez at 68, and TV chef Nigella Lawson at 65. Football legends Howie Long and Charles Haley share a birthday today at the age of 65 and 61, respectively. Let’s also wish a happy birthday to actor Norman Reedus, TV personality Julie Chen Moonves, actor Eddie Redmayne, actor-comedian Kate McKinnon, and businessman Eric Trump, all marking another year.
Let’s remember the events that shaped this day in history, learn from them, and commemorate those worth celebrating on their special day.
