The Hollywood awards season is officially underway with the 82nd annual Golden Globes, and Netflix’s “Emilia Pérez” stole the spotlight by taking home four awards in the movie categories. Following closely behind was “The Brutalist,” which secured three wins in the film categories, and “Shogun,” which dominated the television categories with four victories.

HBO/Max’s comedy series “Hacks” and Netflix’s limited series “Baby Reindeer” also emerged as multiple winners, each taking home two awards during the star-studded event held at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

“Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language French musical crime drama that snagged a record-setting 10 nominations going into the evening, won in categories like best motion picture/musical or comedy, best motion picture/non-English language, best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña, and best original song in a movie for “El Mal.”

The film follows a drug cartel leader portrayed by Karla Sofía Gascón, who enlists the help of a lawyer played by Saldaña to fake her death and transition to living as a woman. Gascón, the first transgender woman nominated in the category of best supporting actress, made history with her performance in the film.

In a category featuring strong contenders like Demi Moore in “The Substance,” Moore clinched the award for best actress, beating out Gascón for her role in “Emilia Pérez.”

“The Brutalist,” a poignant post-World War II saga following an architect’s pursuit of the American Dream, secured the top spot for best motion picture/drama. Additionally, Adrien Brody won best actor in a drama, and Brady Corbet took home the award for best director in a motion picture for their roles in the film.

FX/Hulu’s “Shogun,” a historical drama set in feudal 17th century Japan, swept all four categories it was nominated in, with wins for best TV drama series and individual accolades for Anna Sawai, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Tadanobu Asano.

Meanwhile, the beloved series “Hacks” won best TV series/musical or comedy, and Jean Smart was recognized with a best actress award for her performance.

“Baby Reindeer,” a series based on a true story, also earned two accolades, adding to the diverse range of winners celebrated at this year’s Golden Globes.
