Lost and Abandoned Movies You May Never Get to See

years later, there’s been no sign of it.

Movies can face all sorts of challenges on their journey to the big screen, and sometimes, despite the hard work, time, and money invested, they never make it to audiences. From big-budget superhero flicks like Batgirl to controversial and unseen films like The Day The Clown Cried, the world of cinema is full of lost, abandoned, and unreleased gems that may never see the light of day.

Take Batgirl, for example. This 2022 superhero movie was supposed to star Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl, with Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman. Intended as a straight-to-streaming release, Batgirl was abruptly cancelled in August 2022, leaving it unfinished and unlikely to ever be completed due to the high cost involved.

Then there’s The Day The Clown Cried, a controversial Holocaust drama directed by Jerry Lewis in 1972. Blocked from release by a mix-up with the film’s rights, this film about a clown hired by the Nazis to lead children into the gas chambers remains unseen to this day. Despite efforts to reveal some footage and behind-the-scenes footage to the public, the full finished version may never see the light of day.

All-Star Weekend, a film about two NBA mega fans played by Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Piven, also remains unreleased. The hold-up seems to be related to Robert Downey Jr’s casting as a Mexican character, a decision that has been met with criticism. Despite efforts to drum up interest with a trailer release, the film has yet to find a distributor.

Lastly, Big Bug Man, an animated superhero movie featuring Marlon Brando in his final big-screen performance, never made it to theaters. With Brando voicing a character just weeks before his death in 2004, the film’s release date was repeatedly delayed until it vanished without a trace. Whether any animation was completed for this project remains uncertain, leaving audiences to wonder if they’ll ever get to see Brando’s last film performance.

In the unpredictable world of filmmaking, even the most promising projects can fall victim to unforeseen obstacles. These lost, abandoned, and unreleased movies serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by filmmakers and the delicate balance between creation and distribution in the world of cinema.
