Europol takes down illegal sports streaming network with hundreds of providers
Europol, the European Union’s law enforcement agency, recently conducted a widespread operation involving 15 countries, including Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. During last summer’s European Championship and Paris Olympics, hundreds of illegal sports streaming providers were targeted and dismantled.
La Liga, Spain’s top soccer league, revealed that over 560 resellers of pirated content were identified in the operation. These resellers were offering illegal streams of movies, TV series, and channels. With the collaboration of La Liga, more than 100 suspects were pinpointed, leading to the arrest of 11 individuals.
The operation was strategically executed during major sporting events like UEFA EURO 2024 and the Olympic Games. Its primary goal was to combat digital piracy by tackling the unauthorized publication, distribution, and broadcasting of copyrighted digital content. This significant effort serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against digital piracy and the commitment of authorities to protect intellectual property rights in the digital age.
