Ranking Every ‘What If’ Season 3 Episode
The animated Marvel Studios show, What If…?, had its final season on Disney+ and it’s time to rank all the episodes. Season 3 wrapped up the series, serving as an origin story for Uatu, the Watcher narrator. While it didn’t quite match the excitement of Season 2, there were still some fun moments and creative MCU mash-ups that made it enjoyable.
Season 3 introduced new characters to the alternate universe sandbox, bringing fresh stories and perspectives to the table. Despite some multiverse fatigue, this was a fitting end to the series. Now, let’s dive into the rankings of the episodes.
At the bottom of the list is “What If… What If?”. While not a terrible episode, it fell a bit flat compared to others. The appearance of Strange Supreme and the emotional ending couldn’t make up for the lack of exciting standalone content.
Next up is “What If… the Watcher Disappeared?”. While not a personal favorite, the introduction of The Exiles and the interactions between characters like Storm, Captain Carter, and Bydie made it a standout episode.
In the middle of the pack is “What If… the Hulk Fought the Mech Avengers?”. This visually stunning episode kicked off the season but didn’t quite reach the heights of the later episodes. The nostalgic Avengers cartoons framing device added a fun touch.
Moving on to “What If… the Red Guardian Stopped the Winter Soldier?”. While it was great to see Bucky Barnes get a break, the Soviet Union jokes and propaganda elements were a bit off-putting. The episode did have some redeeming qualities, especially with the return of Bill Foster.
Coming in at number four is “What If… Howard the Duck Got Hitched?”. Despite some initial reservations, the bizarre story involving Darcy Lewis and Howard the Duck won me over in the end. The chaotic alternate universe concept and inventive storytelling made it a memorable watch.
In third place is “What If… the Emergence Destroyed the Earth?”. This episode showcased Riri Williams in action and had a great dystopian vibe. The mix of heroes and villains, along with a simple yet engaging conflict, made it a compelling watch.
Overall, the final season of What If…? may not have hit the highs of previous seasons, but it still delivered some fun and creative storytelling. As we say goodbye to the series, let’s cherish the unique perspectives and characters it brought to the Marvel universe.
