Atlanta Museum Highlights: Arts Agenda

Arts in Atlanta are in full swing with a wide range of exciting exhibitions and events taking place across the city. From the APEX Museum to the SCAD FASH, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Starting at the APEX Museum, they are hosting the “Ancestral Garden: Honoring Black Victorian Material Culture and Accurate Black Americana” exhibition until January 25th. This exhibit dives into the material culture of Black America during the 19th and early 20th centuries, showcasing the use of cameras and photography to combat racism and tell important stories.

Moving to The Bernard A. Zuckerman Museum of Art, visitors can experience “Annet Couwenberg: Sewing Circles” from January 28th to May 10th. This exhibit features ten years of cultural research, digital experimentation, and finished artifacts by Annet Couwenberg, offering a unique perspective on art and culture.

At The Breman, the “JerusaLENS: The World Photographs Jerusalem” exhibition is ongoing. This captivating showcase delves into the essence and beauty of Jerusalem through the lenses of photographers worldwide, exploring the city’s historical, religious, and cultural significance.

For puppet enthusiasts, The Center for Puppetry Arts is hosting the “Puppetry NOW Special Exhibition featuring Raymond Carr” from January 17th to March 16th. This retrospective of Raymond Carr’s 20-year puppetry career includes highlights such as the AFLAC duck, Adult Swim puppets, and works from major platforms like Nick Jr. and Hulu.

Families with young children might enjoy a visit to the Children’s Museum of Atlanta for the “XOXO: An Exhibit About Love and Forgiveness” running from January 25th to May 4th. This interactive exhibit is designed to spark conversations around love and forgiveness among children aged two to 12 and their families.

In the realm of health and wellness, the David J. Sencer CDC Museum is hosting “Health is a Human Right: Achieving Health Equity” until August 1st. This thought-provoking exhibition explores how communities across the U.S. are working towards health equity in the 21st century, showcasing inspiring stories of progress and resilience.

Art enthusiasts should also check out the Fernbank Museum’s “Spirit Guides: Fantastical Creatures from the Workshop of Jacobo and María Ángeles” exhibit from March 29th to August 3rd. This showcase features the mesmerizing Zapotec figures of “Tonos” or “Nahuales” created by the renowned artists Jacobo and María Ángeles.

Lastly, the Museum of Design Atlanta will be hosting “Threads of Change” in February 2025, offering a deep dive into the dynamic relationship between nature and fiber design through intricate installations by artists like Adrian Baker and Christine Wertheim.
