Man Arrested for Poaching Peacocks in Bahraich, Latest News
In Bahraich, a man was arrested for allegedly hunting a peacock and a peahen, confirmed by a local official. The arrest was a joint effort between the forest department and the police. The Divisional Forest Officer, Ajit Pratap Singh, mentioned that they received information about the incident and quickly responded.
After the team arrived at the scene in Mukeria village, they found Hafiz Ali with the dead peacock and peahen in a sugarcane field. The authorities confiscated the carcasses and detained the hunter for further investigation. It was discovered that the birds were trapped in a net and the accused admitted to killing them for consumption. However, the cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem examination.
A panel of three veterinarians will conduct the post-mortem examination on the birds to uncover the truth. The police have taken action against Hafiz Ali under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 for hunting protected birds. The hunter is scheduled to appear in court for the charges.
The Divisional Forest Officer emphasized that peacocks are classified as highly protected wildlife under Schedule-1, along with other iconic animals like tigers and elephants. As a result, the Wildlife Act carries severe penalties for hunting peacocks compared to other species. It’s a reminder of the importance of preserving our precious wildlife and abiding by the laws in place to protect them.
