James Gunn on Why ‘Batman 2’ Delay is Justified: Sequels Often Have a 5-Year Gap or More

James Gunn, the co-chairman of DC Studios, recently defended the delay of The Batman 2 and offered insight into the common practice of long gaps between sequels. Initially set for release in 2026, The Batman 2 will now debut on October 1, 2027, marking a one-year postponement.

Gunn highlighted that delays between sequels are not uncommon in Hollywood, citing examples like the 7-year gap between Alien and Aliens and the 14-year delay between The Incredibles movies. He also mentioned the 36-year gap between Top Gun films and the 6-year wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The primary reason for the delay, according to Gunn, is that the script for The Batman 2 is still in development. He emphasized the importance of delivering a high-quality film, which involves a complex and time-consuming writing process. Once the script is finalized, it will take around two years for pre-production, filming, and post-production.

As a result of The Batman 2 delay, a new release date has been allocated for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s project starring Tom Cruise. This decision reflects Warner Bros.’ careful approach to blockbuster filmmaking, aiming to meet both creative and commercial expectations.
