Santa Claus is getting a makeover! A heartwarming new documentary from HBO Max called “Santa Camp” sheds light on an initiative to bring more diversity to the role of Santa Claus. The film follows the New England Santa Society as they welcome three new Santas who aim to represent the diverse communities they serve.

Meet Chris Kennedy, a Black Santa from Arkansas; Levi Truex, aka Trans Santa, from Chicago; and “Santa Fin” Ciappara, a Santa with spina bifida who communicates using an iPad, alongside his mother, Suki Ciappara, from Barre. These new faces bring a fresh perspective to the iconic role of Santa.

One touching moment in the film shows Santa Fin living his dream of being in a parade. In December 2021, he rode in a sled pulled by elves in the River of Light parade in Waterbury. His message is simple: “Believe in your dreams and don’t give up. Be kind to people who are different.”

Unfortunately, not everyone is on board with this newfound diversity. Kennedy faced backlash after setting up an illuminated, inflatable Black Santa display in his yard. Despite receiving a racist letter, he persevered and embraced the role of Black Santa. Kennedy shared, “You’re not going to steal my joy… I’m here for families who want diversity and representation.”

Similarly, Trans Santa Levi Truex faced challenges when the “Proud Boys” protested outside the Chicago church where he was spreading Christmas cheer. In the face of rising violence against the LGBTQ+ community, Truex remains resilient. He emphasizes that visibility and love are essential in the fight against hate. His mission is simple: to spread joy and be a force for good.

Despite the obstacles, these new Santas are making a difference—especially for LGBTQ+ children who seek representation and inclusion. Truex’s message is clear: “My agenda is to spread joy and be a good person, to treat people with respect, and spread the love of Christmas.”

The documentary sheds light on the challenges and triumphs that come with reimagining Santa Claus for a more inclusive world. Santa Claus may be changing, but the spirit of love and acceptance remains at the heart of the holiday season.
