Prime Video Deals a Major Blow to OTT Subscription Services
Amazon Prime Video India is making a change that might disappoint some users—restricting password sharing in 2025.
Starting next year, users will only be able to log in on a maximum of five devices, including two TVs. This new policy is similar to what Netflix has already implemented.
In an email to Prime Video subscribers, the platform explained, “As part of your Prime membership, you and your household can enjoy Prime Video on up to five devices. Beginning January 2025, we are updating our usage terms in India to include up to two TVs as part of your five devices entitlement. You can manage your devices on your Settings page or purchase another Prime membership to watch Prime Video on more devices.”
Previously, users could log in on up to 10 devices, but with the new policies, this limit has been reduced to five devices, with the inclusion of two TVs. This change might pose a challenge for those who share passwords for watching shows.
Despite the new restrictions, Prime Video still allows simultaneous logins on up to five devices.
Amazon Prime Video had also previously announced that starting in 2025, ads will be shown during TV shows and movies for existing users. However, the platform promises that the amount of ads will be less compared to traditional TV and other platforms. Additionally, a new ad-free tier will be introduced soon.
With these upcoming changes, will Amazon risk losing some of its viewership, or will it attract more subscribers? Only time will tell!
