New Light Shop Achieves 2nd-Largest Korean Series Debut on Disney+
A recent announcement from Disney+ revealed that the live-action TV series Light Shop has made quite an impression, ranking as the platform’s second-largest Korean series debut after Moving. In its first 12 days of streaming, Light Shop has captured the attention of viewers, following the success of Moving on the platform.
This achievement highlights Disney+’s increasing success with Korean content, as nine out of the 15 best-performing international original titles in 2023 were Korean productions. Since venturing into original content production in the APAC region in 2021, Disney+ has released over 130 titles.
Carol Choi, executive vice president of original content strategy at The Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific, emphasized the importance of Korean stories in the global entertainment landscape. She noted the strong audience engagement and worldwide appeal of Korean content, reaffirming the company’s dedication to creating top-notch, talent-driven productions from the region.
Light Shop, a live-action adaptation of a popular webtoon, features Ji-hoon Ju as Won-young, the owner of a unique shop where the living and the dead intersect, and Bo-young Park as Young-ji, an ICU nurse committed to patient recovery. The series, written by Kangfull, the creator of both Moving and Light Shop, is based on the original webtoon serialized in 2011. Fans have speculated about potential connections between Moving and Light Shop, fueling excitement for the confirmed second season of Moving.
As Korean content continues to make waves on Disney+ and beyond, the success of Light Shop serves as a testament to the power of compelling storytelling and talented creators in captivating audiences around the world.
