Meet the Most Fascinating People of 2025: Jess Peacock, Clergyperson at Community Church of Chesterland

0

Jess Peacock, a 53-year-old clergyperson at the Community Church of Chesterland, is not your average pastor. Covered in tattoos and piercings, Jess is leading the way for acceptance and advocacy in religious settings. Their latest project, Queer Cleveland, aims to spotlight local LGBTQ+ artists and creators.

Raised in central Ohio in a deeply Evangelical environment, Jess struggled to conform to the rigid expectations of their faith while coming to terms with their own identity. After spending their 20s outside of the church, Jess eventually found their way back, recognizing the potential for healing and community that religion can offer.

An incredible turning point in Jess’s journey came when they decided to pursue theological education at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio. A pivotal moment was encountering a transgender individual leading a chapel service, which affirmed Jess’s sense of belonging and acceptance.

Despite facing challenges like an arson attempt in 2023, following a successful Pride festival hosted by the Community Church of Chesterland, Jess remains resilient and determined to cultivate a safe and welcoming space for all. Refusing to live in fear, Jess continues to preach love and acceptance, even in the face of adversity.

In addition to their work as a clergyperson, Jess is also an author, delving into the intersection of theology and popular culture with their novel, “Such a Dark Thing: Theology Of The Vampire Narrative In Popular Culture.” Their diverse interests include a lifelong passion for professional wrestling, which has served as a bonding experience with their son.
