“Sly Stone Documentary by Questlove to Premiere at Sundance and Hulu”
A new documentary about Sly and the Family Stone by Questlove is set to premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and then be available on Hulu on February 13th. The film, titled Sly Lives! or The Burden of Black Genius, will pay tribute to the iconic group. Sly Stone, born Sylvester Stewart, formed the successful psychedelic soul-rock-funk group in the mid-1960s, leading them to prominence with chart-topping hits such as “Dance to the Music” and “Everyday People”. The documentary will feature interviews with family, band members, scholars, and musicians to honor and celebrate Black creativity.
Questlove, known for his work in The Roots, had his directorial debut with Summer of Soul, which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. According to him, the upcoming Sly documentary will explore Sly Stone’s creative legacy in-depth, as the musician’s influence on popular music and culture is immeasurable. Stone recently published his memoir, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), giving fans an intimate look into his journey. The documentary is expected to delve into the era Sly Stone rose to fame, encompassing shifting societal norms in the ’60s and the influence of the Black Power movement.
