Netflix Acquires TV Rights for 2027 and 2031 Women’s World Cup
Netflix has just scored big, snagging the US media rights for both the 2027 and 2031 Women’s World Cup tournaments, as announced by FIFA. That means all matches will be available for streaming on the platform, along with a studio show and an exclusive documentary series leading up to the events. The 2027 tournament will take place in Brazil, while bids for the 2031 World Cup are still open, with the US being a potential host.
Netflix’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, expressed excitement about the partnership, highlighting the growing fandom and passion surrounding the Women’s World Cup. The deal not only brings live matches to viewers but also celebrates the players, culture, and the global rise of women’s sports. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
This move expands Netflix’s foray into live sports programming, following successful broadcasts of events like the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson boxing match that attracted 60 million households worldwide. The streaming giant has NFL Christmas Day games lined up and WWE’s Monday Night Raw moving to their platform in January.
This collaboration marks FIFA’s biggest partnership with a streaming service for a major tournament. Previously, Fox aired the 2023 Women’s World Cup, won by Spain, and Netflix released a docuseries following the US Women’s National Team in December 2023.
The agreement covers all languages, with Netflix planning to provide Spanish-language broadcasts in addition to English coverage. FIFA president Gianni Infantino hailed the deal as a landmark moment for sports media rights, showcasing Netflix’s strong commitment to growing women’s football. The partnership cements the real value of the Women’s World Cup and the global women’s game, making it a historic day for broadcasting and women’s football overall.
