Georgetown ISD Waives Counselor Certification Requirements to Fill Vacancies
Georgetown ISD in Texas is making moves to fill their school counselor vacancies by waiving certain certification requirements. The board of trustees recently approved a waiver to eliminate the need for counselors to pass an exam set by the Texas Education Agency.
This change allows potential counselors at GISD to skip the exam requirement, as long as they are still licensed through the Texas state board. The decision comes at a critical time when the district, along with many others, is facing challenges in hiring enough counselors to meet student needs.
With this waiver in place, Georgetown ISD is now able to consider mental health professionals and counselors with a variety of certifications, including licensed professional counselors, licensed professional counselor associates, licensed master social workers, and licensed clinical social workers.
By opening up opportunities for a broader range of qualified professionals to join their team, GISD is working to address the need for more counselors in schools, ultimately aiming to better support the well-being and success of their students.
