Netflix Fined for Failure to Properly Inform Customers
Hey there! Did you know that Netflix recently got fined for not properly informing customers about how they use personal data from 2018 to 2020? The Dutch Data Protection Authority found that Netflix’s privacy statement was unclear in some areas, which led to a fine of 4.75 million euros.
Netflix gathers a range of personal data from customers, including email addresses, phone numbers, payment information, and details about what users watch and when. An investigation in 2019 revealed that Netflix wasn’t clear enough in its privacy statement about how they use this data. Customers also didn’t receive adequate information when asking about the data collected, which violates the GDPR.
The Dutch DPA chair, Aleid Wolfsen, emphasized that companies like Netflix, with millions of customers worldwide, need to be transparent about how they handle personal data. Netflix didn’t provide enough information on key points, like why they collect data, with whom they share it, how long they keep it, and how they keep it secure when transmitting it outside Europe.
The investigation was initiated after complaints from an Austrian privacy organization, Noyb. Since Netflix’s main European base is in the Netherlands, the Dutch DPA led the investigation and coordinated with other European data protection authorities. Although Netflix objected to the fine, they have updated their privacy statement and improved information provision. So, rest assured, they’re working to make things right!
