Sesame Street Seeking New Home for First-Run Episodes

Warner Bros. Discovery recently made an announcement that they will no longer be funding new episodes of “Sesame Street” that premiere first on HBO and Max. This decision essentially means that HBO has decided to cancel the show, but there’s still hope that “Sesame Street” could find a new home under a different production and funding setup.

Back in 2015, HBO struck a deal to cover the production costs of “Sesame Street” in exchange for having the rights to air new episodes first. After their debut on HBO, these episodes would later air on PBS member stations. The show itself costs a hefty $25 million each year to make and is produced by Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization previously known as Children’s Television Workshop.

Sesame Workshop not only produces “Sesame Street” but also creates a range of other programs and manages licensing rights for characters featured on their shows. Their most famous and beloved creation is, of course, “Sesame Street.” Initially airing on HBO Max, which has since rebranded to just Max, the fate of this iconic show remains uncertain.
