Naomi Girma: San Diego Wave FC Defender Named to The Best FIFA Women’s 11

Big news for soccer fans! San Diego Wave FC defender, Naomi Girma, has been named to The Best FIFA Women’s 11 for 2024, recognizing her as one of the top players globally. Girma had an outstanding year, winning a gold medal at the Paris Olympics with the U.S. Women’s National Team and excelling in the NWSL season with San Diego.

At just 24, Girma has proven herself as one of the best defenders in the world in her third year with the USWNT. During the 2024 Olympics, she played every minute for the USA, a remarkable achievement. She was pivotal in the defense that conceded only two goals throughout the tournament and secured shutouts in all three knockout stage matches. Additionally, Girma shone for Wave FC in the 2024 NWSL season, playing over 1,700 minutes across 20 games and earning a spot on the NWSL Best XI Second Team.

This is Girma’s first time being named to The Best FIFA Women’s 11, a well-deserved recognition, especially after scoring her first two international goals in a friendly against Argentina. ESPN FC’s Top 50 Women’s Players of 2024 ranked her as the #2 player in the world. Girma joins teammates Lindsey Horan and Alyssa Naeher, who were also recognized for their contributions to the gold medal-winning U.S. team.

Looking ahead, the USA will compete in the 2025 SheBelieves Cup with matches in Houston, Glendale, and San Diego. It all kicks off on February 20th at Shell Energy Stadium, so make sure to grab your tickets and witness top-tier soccer action! Let’s continue to cheer on Naomi Girma and the U.S. Women’s National Team as they strive for more success on the field.
