Falcons and Wolverines Victorious at Charger Charity Classic
Eight boys’ teams and six girls’ teams recently competed in the Charger Charity Classic basketball tournament hosted by Centennial High School. In the boys’ draw-style event, the Marion Graham Falcons secured a narrow 67-65 victory over the Moose Jaw Peacock Toilers in the final. Mukungu Mutabazi scored 27 points for Moose Jaw, while Spencer Hyrcan led Marion Graham with 21.
The Marion Graham Falcons emerged as champions after defeating the Weyburn Eagles 61-36 in the quarterfinals and then securing a 77-54 win over the Prince Albert St. Mary’s Marauders in the semifinal. Prince Albert went on to capture the bronze by defeating the North Battleford Vikings 81-72.
On the girls’ side, the Winston Knoll Wolverines from Regina claimed victory with a 63-44 win over North Battleford. Maddie Chicoine led both teams with 22 points, while Jorja Geddes netted 17 points for the Vikings. Both teams went undefeated in round-robin play to advance to the final. The Centennial Chargers clinched the bronze by winning 57-48 over Prince Albert.
Hockey Canada has announced the roster for the 2025 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship, featuring three Saskatchewan players: Alida Korte and Ava Drabyk from Saskatoon, and Stryker Zablocki from Prince Albert. Zablocki was part of the 2024 roster that secured a bronze medal for Canada.
In curling, multiple Saskatchewan teams participated in the RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown in Swift Current. Regina’s Michelle Englot advanced to the quarterfinals in the women’s event, with other Saskatchewan teams competing including Saskatoon’s Ashley Thevenot, Regina’s Jolene Campbell and Jenna Enge, as well as Moose Jaw’s Sherrilee Orsted. On the men’s side, Saskatoon’s Mike McEwen secured a playoff spot, while other Saskatchewan teams, such as Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock and Charley Thomas, Regina’s Kelly Knapp, Swift Current’s Steve Laycock, and Kerrobert’s Drew Heidt, competed to secure a spot in the playoffs.
