Da’Vine Joy Randolph Shares Her Favorite Foods and Cooking Passions
Growing up in Philadelphia, Da’Vine had the opportunity to explore a wide range of delicious cuisines. Her parents made sure she tried it all, from Jewish to Italian to Chinese food. She even had sushi at a young age! Food has always been a big part of her family, with her parents both being fantastic cooks. Her mom’s fried cabbage and eggplant parmigiana were favorites, along with a quiche-soufflé hybrid filled with spinach, mushrooms, and cheese. Da’Vine, while not a vegetarian, found herself loving vegetarian dishes as well.
What brings Da’Vine the most joy is cooking for others. She meticulously researches recipes, comparing multiple sources to create her own unique dishes. Recently, she’s been fixated on tweaking the classic spaghetti al limone recipe to make it her own. For Da’Vine, cooking is an art form, and she loves the creative process of developing new recipes.
During her travels, Da’Vine has encountered amazing food experiences. In Italy, she fell in love with the lemons and tomatoes of the Amalfi Coast. At Ristorante La Torre One Fire in Massa Lubrense, she learned how to make limoncello, creating lasting memories with the warm, welcoming owner. Fish and chips in London also captured her heart, with a special dehydrated malt vinegar powder adding a unique twist to the classic dish.
While filming “The Holdovers,” Da’Vine incorporated her love for cooking into her character. She wanted the cooking scenes to feel authentic and intentional, reflecting her character’s skills and personality. For Da’Vine, cooking is not just a job, but a passion she enjoys bringing to her roles.
When planning her travels, Da’Vine prioritizes checking out local restaurants. She avoids touristy spots and seeks out authentic dining experiences. Thai food holds a special place in her heart, with its diverse flavor profiles that blend sweet, savory, sour, and spicy. Da’Vine hopes to continue exploring and learning more about cooking Thai cuisine in the future.
