Sesame Street Searches for New Home as HBO Max Deal Expires
Sesame Street, the beloved children’s TV show, is on the lookout for a new home! Warner Bros. Discovery has decided not to renew its deal with HBO and Max, which means Sesame Street is now in the market for a new place to call home.
While Max will be licensing episodes from Sesame Workshop through 2027, it’s still not clear if this deal would prevent other potential partners from acquiring the old episodes of the show. The decision not to continue the deal with HBO and Max was part of a strategy shift towards more adult and family programming, with less focus on children’s content.
Sesame Street, which first aired in 1969, has been running on PBS since 1970. In 2016, the show made the move to HBO, with episodes later airing on PBS to ensure accessibility. A deal in 2019 brought Sesame Street to HBO Max, now known as Max.
The team at Max expressed gratitude for the creative experience of working with Sesame Street and looks forward to announcing new distribution plans in the coming months to ensure that Sesame Street continues to reach as many children as possible for years to come. Stay tuned for updates on where Sesame Street will find its new home!
