Worcester police officer sentenced to prison for misconduct
A police officer from West Mercia Police found guilty of misconduct offenses is heading to prison for 18 months. Nicholas Peacock, 40, a former PC based in Market Drayton, was sentenced at the Shrewsbury Crown Court on December 10th after pleading guilty to misconduct in public office back in October.
Peacock’s misconduct involved engaging in a sexual relationship with a suspect in an assault case he was supposed to investigate. He closed the case prematurely, falsely attributing it to lack of witnesses and victim support for prosecution. This breach of duty led to his sentencing of 18 months in prison.
Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Rachel Jones expressed deep disappointment in Peacock’s actions, condemning his abuse of power and betrayal of trust. The case was initially brought to light on April 22, 2022, triggering Peacock’s suspension and an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Evidence from Peacock’s work phone revealed inappropriate interactions with the suspect, prompting the IOPC to take swift action. In November 2022, the IOPC completed its investigation, leading to charges authorized by the Crown Prosecution Service. The case Peacock neglected to investigate has since been reopened, resulting in a suspect being charged.
Although Peacock resigned from the police force in March, misconduct proceedings are still pending against him. Despite receiving a 27-month sentence initially, his guilty plea led to a reduction to 18 months.
Deputy Chief Constable Jones stressed the importance of accountability within the police force, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards such misconduct. Peacock’s actions were swiftly addressed, highlighting the commitment to upholding integrity and professionalism within the law enforcement community.
