Esky’s Cold Second Quarter Costs Game Against Norway
Escanaba boys’ basketball faced off against Norway in another tough match-up following a recent loss to Kingsford. Despite a strong start with three ties and lead changes, the game took a turn in the first half when Norway went on a 13-0 run, building a significant lead. Escanaba coach Tom Gereau expressed frustration at missed opportunities and execution errors against Norway’s zone defense.
The Eskymos found some momentum towards the end of the first half when Lennox Peacock made a buzzer-beater shot from way downtown, cutting the deficit to 10 points. This boost carried into the locker room and fired up the team for the second half. Despite a valiant effort and spurts of a comeback, Norway consistently answered back, with Cole Baij leading the charge with 25 points, mostly in the second half.
Esky’s resilience was evident as they continued to fight back, with Peacock and Javon Stevenson contributing 20 and 19 points, respectively. However, Norway’s efficiency from the free-throw line and timely shots sealed the victory. Coach Jeff Gallino praised his team’s energy and execution, highlighting Baij as their go-to player.
Although Escanaba fell short, Gereau recognized the team’s effort and determination, emphasizing the importance of learning and improving. The Eskymos look ahead to their next game against Painesdale Jeffers, while Norway prepares to face Iron Mountain. Despite the loss, Escanaba’s grit and perseverance show promise for the rest of the season.
