Review of The Willard’s Famous Holiday Afternoon Tea

The Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington, D.C. is known for its famed holiday afternoon tea, a must-visit spot in the city. It can be a challenge to snag a reservation, as the best spots fill up quickly, but this year I was able to experience the holiday tea at Peacock Alley, the renowned tea hall within the hotel. So, did it live up to the hype?

Located near The White House, The Willard is a national landmark with a rich history. It has hosted famous historical figures, including President Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. The hotel’s dining options are top-notch, with the Round Robin Bar being a popular hangout spot for D.C. insiders. The afternoon tea at Peacock Alley is also a hot ticket, especially during the winter and spring when holiday and Cherry Blossom-themed teas are offered.

Tea is available on weekends year-round, with additional days during the holiday season. The Tea Room hosts tea on weekdays, where guests can enjoy a variety of teas, food, and even add an optional glass of champagne. Each seating lasts for about two hours, and the menus change seasonally with the added bonus of live harp music.

I love afternoon tea because it combines two of my favorite things—chatting and delicious treats. The best teas I’ve experienced have had beautiful settings, great tea selection, and tasty desserts. The Willard’s afternoon tea fits the bill, priced at $90 per adult or $105 with champagne, making it a luxurious treat.

When I attended the holiday tea at Peacock Alley, the ambience was festive and grand. The lobby was elegant, leading to a beautifully decorated tea area lined with Christmas trees and poinsettia arrangements. Despite the narrow space, there was ample room between tables, and the live harpist playing holiday tunes added to the cozy atmosphere.

The tea menu featured a variety of loose leaf and blended teas, including seasonal blends and traditional favorites. We tried a seasonal blend and a classic option, enjoying the rich flavors and warm ambiance of the tea room. Overall, the holiday tea at The Willard was a delightful experience, combining luxurious surroundings with delicious treats and good company.
