Three New Netflix Releases Reviewed: Spellbound and More
Three New Netflix Releases Reviewed Including Spellbound
Vicky Jensen, known for her work on Shrek and Shark Tale, brings us Spellbound, a 3D animated fantasy musical on Netflix. Princess Ellian (Rachel Zegler) must deal with her cursed monster parents. To help, she enlists the magical oracles Sunny (Tituss Burgess) and Luno (Nathan Lane). The movie is a unique metaphor for divorce, though the animation and story fall short, earning it a 2 out of 5 rating.
On a different note, “The Remarkable Life of Ibelin” tells the story of Mats Steen, who found community and love through World of Warcraft before passing away. The documentary takes an unexpected turn by recreating his gameplay, offering a touching look at the positive side of gaming and the internet. Despite initial skepticism, this Netflix doc is a must-watch, earning a 4 out of 5 rating.
Lastly, Emilia Perez, an operatic musical about a drug cartel kingpin transitioning, featuring Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez, fell short of expectations. While the performances shine, the film suffers from inaccurate trans representation and a jumbled script, earning a 2.5 out of 5 rating. Awards buzz aside, Emilia Perez leaves much to be desired in terms of engagement and storytelling.
