Stream Your Favorite Shows This Season
The holiday season is upon us, and according to Luminate’s Streaming Viewership (M), this is the time when holiday content truly shines. We’ve all seen those classic holiday tunes climbing the charts and old festive movies taking over traditional TV channels like Hallmark and Freeform.
But now, with more focus on streaming platforms, how are these trends evolving, and what impact are they having on the way we enjoy holiday content? Let’s delve into the data.
Take, for example, “The Christmas Chronicles,” a Netflix hit from 2018 starring Kurt Russell. According to Streaming Viewership (M), there was a whopping 8000% increase in viewership between Halloween and Christmas Day! And, it’s not just a one-time thing – there are consistent spikes in viewership around Thanksgiving weekend and the first two weekends of December.
Looking at the Top 50 Movies chart on Streaming Viewership (M), it’s clear that holiday films are taking over. In November 2024, one holiday movie cracked the Top 10, but by December, the list had grown to feature five holiday titles! Notably, even a low-budget Christmas movie like “Our Little Secret,” led by Lindsay Lohan, managed to outshine big-budget productions like “Spellbound.” Looks like Lohan has become a Christmas movie favorite!
Despite the rise of holiday movies on streaming platforms, traditional TV channels have held their ground. Networks like Hallmark Channel and Great American Family still dedicate a huge portion of their Q4 schedule to holiday content. So, while streaming may be on the rise, linear TV isn’t going anywhere when it comes to spreading the holiday cheer.
