Skeleton Crew TV Show review: First 2 Episodes Off to a Strong Start

Lucasfilm premiered its latest Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew, last week on Disney+ with Jon Watts, the director behind Marvel’s Spider-Man movies, at the helm. Following the release of The Acolyte, which left many fans disappointed, there’s definitely some skepticism surrounding the new Star Wars show. And rightfully so, given the track record of Kathleen Kennedy with the franchise.

The good news is, at least for the first two episodes, Skeleton Crew is off to a really strong start. It’s engaging, with plenty of mystery, action, and intrigue. The special effects are top-notch and leave you eager for more. All in all, a success!

Yes, the series may have some similarities to Goonies, and you might even catch some familiar music, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Skeleton Crew feels more inspired by Goonies than a direct copy. The story follows a group of kids who stumble upon a starship, get launched into space, and encounter some shady characters. They start to question their home planet and may have even met a Jedi. How will they find their way back home?

Overall, the story is compelling, although some viewers, myself included, found the kids’ home planet a bit too similar to Earth. One confusing aspect is how the kids seem aware of starships and Jedi, yet claim they haven’t seen stars before. It suggests that the people on their planet have been isolated for some reason, possibly believing they’re the only ones in the galaxy. But the full truth remains to be seen.

I was particularly impressed by the acting of the child cast, who really came across as close friends with excellent chemistry. The character SM 33 also seems to be a fan favorite.

In conclusion, the first two episodes of Skeleton Crew deliver a fun and enjoyable experience. It’s not dumbed down for a young audience, making it suitable for all viewers. I would rate the first two episodes an 8 out of 10 and hope they can maintain this level of quality in the episodes to come.

You can catch new episodes of Skeleton Crew streaming every Tuesday on Disney+.
